*** General information ***
The dataset was collected during a field experiment on the Red Sea coastline of Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. The data is published in: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.145520

We conducted experiments on 4 types of biogenic habitats (seagrass, corals, macroalgae, bare sediment), using two types of microplastics (2.5 mm and 0.5 mm particle size).

Raw ADV files can be found in ADV.zip

The textfiles contain the raw data on benthic canopy characteristics and plastic trapping counts in the aboveground structures and sediments:

- Plastic_canopy.txt: 0.5 mm plastics trapped in aboveground structures
	col 1) species (0 = control, 1 = seagrass, 2 = coral, 3 = macroalgae)
col 2) number of 0.5 mm particles trapped

- Plastic_sediment.txt: 0.5 mm plastics trapped in the sediment. We collected 3 cores per experiment.
col 1) species (same as in Plastic_canopy.txt)
col 2-4) number of 0.5 mm particles for each core

- SurfaceArea.txt: surface area in cm^2 of the tested biogenic habitats
col 1) species (same as in Plastic_canopy.txt)
col 2) surface area in cm^2
col 3) surface area to volume ratio

The two matlab scripts contain the code used for calculations and figures as presented in the paper:

- Padina_surfar.mlx: matlab code for deriving the surface area - canopy volume relation for the macroalgae. Has no file dependencies.

- Analysis.mlx: matlab code for the analysis presented in the paper. This will only run with proper linkage to the ADV files (unzipped) and textfiles. All functions used can be easily found online at matworks.com
