Description:
Data_Community carbon use.csv: A field dataset detailing the abundance and carbon use strategies (obtained with C13 isotopes) of marine macroalgae within 3 wave-exposed and 4 wave-sheltered coastal kelp forests in Otago, New Zealand, along with site information such as temperature, light, nutrients of each site.

PvsDIC_Curves.csv: A dataset of the results from a laboratory experiment measuring the photosynthetic response of Xiphophora gladiata and Hymenena palmata to increasing DIC concentrations and under high or low water motion and high (8.1) or low (7.6) pH.

Data_Community carbon use.csv - 
WaterMotion: exposed = wave-exposed or sheltered = wave-sheltered
Site: The site where measurements were conducted
Species: The species of macroalgae
Functional_group: The allocated functional group, depending on morphology
Abund_mean: The mean abundance of the species at the site, measured as percent cover
Abund_SE: The standard error of the mean abundance
Abund_95%CI: The 95% confidence interval of the mean abundance
CarbonUse_strategy: The defined carbon use strategy based on the C13 signature (CCM = carbon concentrating mechanism (> -29 C13), Non-CCM = no carbon concentrating mechanism (< -29 C13) and Calcareous = calcifying algae)
C13sig_mean: The mean Carbon 13 isotope signature (n=3)
C13_sigSE: The standard error of the mean C13 signature
C13_sig_95%ci: The 95% confidence interval of the mean C13 signature
Source of C13_sig data: Either from measurements within this study, or taken from the published work of Hepburn et al. 2011 (Global Change Biology, doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2486.2011.02411.x)

DIC_mM: The concentration of DIC within the seawater of the experiment chamber in mM
Photosynthesis_umolO2g-1FW.s-1: The photosynthetic rate measured as umol O2 g-1 (fresh weight) s-1
Code: The full code of the experimental conditions 
pH: The pH of the seawater, either 8.1 or 7.6
WaterMotion: The level of flow within the experimental chamber, either High (fast) or Low (slow)
Species: The species of macroalgae used in the experiment
Individual: The individual replicate
