In anaerobic conditions, haloalkaline sulphide oxidising bacteria (SOB) are able to spatially separate sulphide removal and oxygen consumption, thereby shuttling sulphide from sulphidic to aerobic environments. How SOB anaerobically remove sulphide is not yet fully understood. To further describe sulphide shuttling, anaerobic sulphide removal experiments were performed at different pH from 7.5 to 10. SOB were isolated from bioreactor effluent of a pilot-scale desulphurisation setup, resuspended in 1 M bicarbonate buffer, made anaerobic by flushing with nitrogen gas, and fed 0.35 mM sulphide. For half an hour, the sulphide concentration was measured periodically. Using this dataset, the related publication shows the use of mathematical models to describe anaerobic sulphide removal and its dependency on pH.
